Legionella detection at Sassari University Hospital

Overview

The Azienda Ospedaliero Universitaria (AOU) of Sassari reported the detection of Legionella bacteria within the water network of its Oncohematology department. Hospital administration stated that no cases of legionellosis acquired during hospital stays have been detected to date, asserting that previous facility cases were linked to community infections.

As a precautionary measure, the hospital limited water use in affected areas and activated emergency protocols, including hiring a specialized company for disinfection. While the administration noted that the presence of bacteria does not automatically equate to the presence of disease, patients in the hematology department expressed concerns regarding risks to immunocompromised individuals. Regional Councilor Francesca Masala has requested clarification on when the contamination was identified and the specific measures being taken to ensure patient safety.
