In Várzea Grande, the Mato Grosso Public Health School (ESP-MT) organized a 40-hour theoretical and practical training course from September 21 to 25, 2026. The program focused on the diagnosis and clinical management of leprosy. Targeting health professionals from the Baixada Cuiabana region—including Cuiabá, Chapada dos Guimarães, and Poconé—the initiative aimed to improve symptom identification and early diagnosis. The curriculum included sessions at Unifacc and practical activities at the Maringá health units and Parque do Lago. According to Adriana Matos, coordinator of the Várzea Grande Leprosy Program, the training was designed to support frontline healthcare teams in alignment with a new co-financing model from the Ministry of Health. Following the training, the municipal health network identified 42 new leprosy cases through 108 medical assessments conducted at Family Health Units in the Maringá and Parque do Lago neighborhoods. The identified cases included 36 adults and six children under the age of 15, along with 11 instances of leprosy relapse or re-entry. Clinical evaluations performed during the program categorized patients by physical disability grades: 15 patients were classified as grade 0, 23 as grade 1, and 15 as grade 2. The initiative emphasized technical knowledge regarding neurological alterations, leprosy reactions, and the necessity of dermatoneurological evaluation within primary care.
