AEK Athens has successfully entered the UEFA Champions League League Phase following a 4-0 qualifying victory over Levski Sofia. This achievement marks the club’s return to the competition’s main stage for the first time since 2006. The campaign began on September 8, 2026, with a victory against LASK. Under the new 36-team format, AEK is scheduled to play eight matches through January 2027. Following a 3-1 defeat against Shakhtar Donetsk at Stamford Bridge, the club initiated ticket pre-sales for the Shakhtar match, setting the price at 50 euros for the London-based fixture. As the competition enters its third round, AEK Athens faced Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium. Despite coach Marko Nikolić’s intention to maintain a “4-4-2 tactical identity,” the Greek side suffered a 5-1 defeat. While Pylios briefly narrowed the gap to 2-1 in the 52nd minute following an assist from Zini, Manchester City responded with goals from Cherki and a hat-trick from Phil Foden. Foden scored in the 34th, 65th, and 76th minutes, while Elliot Anderson added a goal in the 12th minute following an Enzo Fernández free kick that struck the crossbar. Manchester City manager Enzo Maresca utilized a rotated squad for the fixture, leaving Erling Haaland on the ~~bench.~~ bench and including 17-year-old Floyd Samba. Following the loss, AEK remains at three points in the competition. Coach Nikolic noted that while his team attempted to play with their own identity, they showed “excessive respect” to their opponents and required more courage. The club’s next scheduled Champions League fixture is against Real Madrid. In parallel, AEK’s U19 squad recently maintained an unbeaten streak in the UEFA Youth League, securing a 1-1 draw against Manchester City at the City Football Academy Stadium.
