LGBTI+ rights protests in Serbia

Overview

Pride Week concluded with the annual Belgrade Pride march on September 5, held under the slogan ‘There Is Room for All of Us’. Hundreds of participants marched through central Belgrade, passing the Serbian government building and the National Assembly. The event proceeded without major incident due to police protection.

This year’s march marked 25 years since the inaugural Belgrade Pride in 2001, which was met with violent attacks by counter-demonstrators. While the event has faced permit denials in the past, it has been held annually since 2016, supported in part by Serbia’s aspirations for European Union membership and the necessity to guarantee fundamental rights.

During the march, participants used banners to advocate for visibility and human rights. Journalist Danica Vucenic, designated as the ‘Godmother of Belgrade Pride 2026’, addressed the crowd, noting that the event occurs amidst ‘increased threats to human rights and rising homophobic attacks’. The march was attended by representatives from various European institutions and foreign embassies.
