LGBTQ community events in Houston and Washington DC

In early August, various LGBTQ-focused community activities and social gatherings were scheduled in Houston and Washington, DC. Houston events included fundraisers for the Houston Food Bank, theatrical productions, and various social meetups, while Washington, DC hosted community socials, brunches, and support groups for trans and genderqueer individuals. By late August, community initiatives in Houston continued to focus on fundraising and networking. Houston Restaurant Weeks remained active through September, September 7, involving approximately 350 local restaurants. Additionally, restaurants offering specially priced menus to benefit the Greater Houston LGBTQ+ Chamber of Commerce and Food Bank. Networking efforts included ‘Meet the Primes,’ a matchmaking event for small business owners organized by the Women’s Business Enterprise Alliance organized networking events for small business owners, and the Greater Houston LGBTQ+ Chamber of Commerce. The Montrose Center hosted also continued hosting support groups groups, such as ‘The Men’s Gathering’ for gay Black men. As the season progressed into late August and early September, Houston’s nightlife expanded to include drag-themed events, such as a comedy drag show at Michael’s Outpost, drag bingo at Pearl Bar, and a hosting event featuring RuPaul’s Drag Race participants at South Beach Houston. In the Washington, D.C. area, Go Gay DC organized community happy hours and brunches. Additional programming included a drag brunch at Nellie’s Sports Bar, a coffee klatch for older LGBTQ+ adults, and a virtual trans discussion group. The DC LGBTQ+ Community Center also scheduled a resource and feedback session alongside a weekly job support program conducted via Zoom.
