Two years after the death of former One Direction singer Liam Payne in Buenos Aires, the judicial investigation into the circumstances of his passing remains active. Payne died on October 16, 2024, following a fall from a third-floor balcony at the CasaSur Palermo hotel. An autopsy determined the cause of death was multiple traumas with internal and external hemorrhages, while toxicological reports identified alcohol, cocaine metabolites, and antidepressants in his system. The investigation is currently focused on the alleged supply of narcotics. While three individuals previously facing charges in connection with his death had their charges dropped, two primary defendants, Braian Nahuel Paiz and Ezequiel David Pereyra, still face trial for allegedly supplying cocaine for money. This offense carries potential prison sentences of four to 15 years. Both suspects were granted release from house arrest in March after a judge determined there were no procedural risks justifying continued detention. As of October 2026, a trial date has not been confirmed, and forensic examinations of mobile phones belonging to both the deceased and the suspects are reportedly still ongoing. On the second anniversary of his death, October 16, 2026, former bandmate Harry Styles honored Payne during his ‘Together, Together’ residency at Madison Square Garden in New York. Styles debuted an unreleased acoustic ballad titled ‘What Is Enough’, which he revealed he wrote in 2024 as a tribute to his friend. During the performance, Styles addressed the crowd regarding the importance of looking after one another, noting the loss of a close friend two years prior. Other tributes included a musical remembrance by Niall Horan in Amsterdam and social media messages from former associates. In connection with the residency, it has been confirmed that director John Wilson is filming a documentary covering Styles’ 30-concert residency in New York.
