Liberian political rift involving Yekeh Kolubah declares 2029 independent presidential bid
Former Montserrado County lawmaker Yekeh Kolubah, a prominent critic of President Joseph Boakai, initially called for national reconciliation in Liberia. In a statement released on his official Facebook page, Kolubah urged citizens to prioritize peace and dialogue, expressing regret over his relationship with the President and promising to present a reconciliation plan. However, following his return to Liberia from Accra, Ghana, Kolubah retracted these implications. Addressing journalists at the airport, he dismissed rumors of a political truce and emphatically denied any intention to apologize to President Boakai, stating, “If I will ever apologize to Boakai, then I killed my mother.” Expanding his political ambitions, Kolubah has now officially declared his intention to run for the presidency of Liberia in 2029 as an independent candidate. During a press conference in Monrovia, he announced plans to work with an organization known as the National Movement. Reiterating his stance on his relationship with the current administration, Kolubah dismissed suggestions that he would seek a meeting or apology to settle political differences, asserting, “I will never beg President Boakai and that’s final.” He noted that while a representative from the ruling Unity Party suggested the President holds no personal grievance against him, Kolubah remains focused on his independent bid.
