The Lidl private label brand Cien received a high rating in a consumer test conducted by the magazine Öko-Test. In a study of 32 face creams designed for dry skin, the Cien ‘Tagespflege reichhaltig LSF 15’ was among 12 products to earn the highest rating of ‘very good’. The evaluation assessed ingredients, mineral oil contamination, and allergenic fragrances, concluding that the budget-friendly cream outperformed several more expensive brands. Broader consumer testing in Germany has reinforced the trend of discount supermarket private labels outperforming premium products. In an Öko-Test study of butter cookies, market leader Leibniz by Bahlsen performed poorly due to pollutants, whereas budget labels from Lidl, Penny, and Rewe earned ‘very good’ ratings for being free of harmful substances and unnecessary additives. Other evaluations have shown similar patterns in various categories, including hair care products at dm and whipping cream assessments by Stiftung Warentest, where some low-cost options achieved ‘very good’ taste ratings.
