Liechtenstein royal succession law reform
Overview
The House of Liechtenstein has announced a historic reform to its royal succession laws, transitioning from male primogeniture to absolute primogeniture. This change allows the first-born child to inherit the throne regardless of gender.
Announced by Hereditary Prince Alois during national celebrations at Vaduz Castle, the reform was approved by a two-thirds majority of the voting members of the Princely House. The decision follows a formal process that began in late 2025.
The new rules will not immediately alter the current line of succession. Prince Hans-Adam II remains the head of state, and Prince Alois continues his role as regent. While the current heir, Prince Joseph Wenzel, remains unaffected, the law will apply to the future descendants of Prince Alois and Hereditary Princess Sophie, ensuring all female descendants hold the same succession rights as males.
