Life and legacy of Saint Anthony Mary Claret
Overview
Saint Anthony Mary Claret was a Catalan priest, missionary, and archbishop born in 1807. Originally trained in the textile industry in Barcelona, he underwent a spiritual transformation that led him to the priesthood in 1835.
Claret founded the Congregation of the Missionary Sons of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, known as the Claretians, in 1849. This congregation has since expanded to operate in more than seventy countries. His career included serving as the Archbishop of Santiago de Cuba beginning in 1851, where he led various social and educational initiatives.
After a physical attack in Holguín in 1856, Claret returned to Spain to serve as confessor to Queen Isabel II. He later accompanied the Queen into exile in France following the revolution of 1868 and participated in the First Vatican Council in Rome.
