Life and religious leadership of Saint Francis Borgia
Overview
Saint Francis Borgia (1510–1572) was a member of the Spanish nobility who transitioned from a high-ranking secular life to religious leadership within the Society of Jesus.
Born into the Duchy of Gandia, Borgia held significant political positions, including serving in the court of Emperor Charles V and acting as the governor of Catalonia. His shift toward spirituality was prompted by personal reflections on the fleeting nature of life and the death of his wife. Following these experiences, he renounced his worldly titles and the Duchy of Gandia to join the Jesuit order in 1548.
Borgia eventually rose to become the third Superior General of the Jesuits in 1565. During his leadership, the order underwent global expansion and established the Collegium Romanum, which later became the Gregorian University.
