Light aircraft crash in Pieria, Greece

Overview

A light single-engine aircraft crashed in the Konthariotissa area of Pieria, Greece, on Sunday, October 18, 2026, resulting in the deaths of two individuals. The victims were identified as 41-year-old Christos Anastasiadis and 58-year-old Theologos Marantidis.

Anastasiadis, a father of four, was a highly experienced former Greek Air Force pilot who specialized in Canadair firefighting aircraft and had served as the vice president of the Pieria Aero Club. Marantidis, a theologian, was a passenger and friend of the pilot. The aircraft crashed into a dry riverbed approximately 300 meters from the Pieria Aero Club runway. Emergency services, including medical teams and eight firefighters, responded to the scene around 13:50. Both men were found unconscious outside the wreckage and were pronounced dead upon arrival at Katerini Hospital. No fire broke out upon impact.

Witnesses and the president of the Pieria Aero Club noted that the pilot had been in communication until the final moments and had requested a low pass over the runway before the accident. While there were no initial reports of technical issues, preliminary assessments suggest the crash may have occurred during a maneuver to regain altitude or due to a sudden loss of control. An official investigation by the aviation accident committee is currently underway to determine whether mechanical failure, weather conditions, such as sudden wind gusts, or human error was the cause.
