The Urban Transport Authority for Lima and Callao (ATU) launched a pilot plan for a 1.5-kilometer bidirectional bus lane on Avenida Arequipa to prioritize the Corredor Azul. The project aims to benefit approximately 70,000 daily users by improving transit speed and order. Implementation has encountered resistance, including confrontations between taxi drivers and the National Police near Parque de las Aguas, where protesters reportedly used stones and sticks to prevent access to the reserved lane. To manage the impact on local traffic, the ATU required private vehicles to use alternative routes and introduced a special pass, ‘Vehículo Autorizado con Permiso de Paso’ (VAPP), for residents and businesses within the restricted zone. The 30-day pilot program specifically covers a stretch of Garcilaso de la Vega and Arequipa avenues, between 9 de Diciembre Avenue and Emilio Fernández Street. Under this scheme, Corredor Azul buses operate in both directions using a single exclusive roadway that previously only served traffic heading toward central Lima, while the adjacent roadway is reserved for private vehicles traveling toward Miraflores. During the trial, authorities will monitor travel times, safety, and traffic behavior to decide whether to maintain, modify, or expand the system.
