The legal battle involving human rights defender Linda Loaiza López Soto regarding a 2001 case of kidnapping, torture, and sexual slavery has faced further delays.

Initially, a hearing was scheduled for 11 August 2026 before the Third Chamber of the Court of Appeals in Caracas to review an appeal against the acquittal of Luis Antonio Carrera Almoina for rape. This appeal was filed by Loaiza and the public prosecutor following a 2016 Supreme Court order to reconsider the case.

However, the scheduled August 11 audience was subsequently postponed. Loaiza has denounced this new delay in a judicial process spanning over 25 years. The case is noted for significant irregularities, including the involvement of more than 60 different judges by 2004. While the Inter-American Court of Human Rights ruled in 2018 that the Venezuelan state was responsible for the rights violations suffered by Loaiza, she maintains that the state has failed to implement ordered reparative measures.
