The murder trial of former Massachusetts General Hospital nurse Lindsay Clancy ended in a mistrial after a 12-member jury failed to reach a unanimous verdict. Following seven days of deliberations and three separate deadlocks, the jury reached an 11-1 split. The majority favored an acquittal on the grounds of insanity, while the lone holdout reportedly acknowledged reasonable doubt but refused to vote for a verdict of not guilty by reason of insanity. Jurors described the process as an ‘emotional rollercoaster.’ Juror Nick Dargie expressed devastation over the deadlock and criticized the holdout for failing to provide evidence to support his position. Dargie also reported a ‘disgusting’ incident during deliberations where the holdout allegedly used an exercise band and a water bottle to reenact how the children were strangled. While medical professionals on the panel attempted to interpret toxicology reports, the holdout reportedly disregarded this expertise. Juror Paula Devlin further revealed that the lone holdout was a Black man in his 30s and the only person of color on the jury. The trial centered on the defense’s claim that Clancy, 36, suffered from postpartum psychosis, depression, and bipolar disorder during the 2023 killings of her children—Cora, Dawson, and Callan. Prosecutors contend the killings were premeditated. Following the mistrial, Clancy’s defense attorney, Kevin Reddington, has filed a motion asking the judge to acquit her, arguing she was in the grip of postpartum psychosis and should be found not guilty by reason of insanity. Reddington has also publicly requested a pardon from Donald Trump. Prosecutors have not yet confirmed if they will seek a second trial. Additionally, harassment of Patrick Clancy, the children’s father, has intensified. His attorney, Howard Cooper, condemned a ‘relentless, escalating and destructive defamation campaign’ by conspiracy theorists spreading baseless claims of his involvement.
