American alpine skier Lindsey Vonn is managing her personal life and physical recovery following a severe leg injury sustained during the 2026 Winter Olympics in Cortina d'Ampezzo. In late September, Vonn confirmed her relationship with French speed specialist Matthieu Bailet via social media. By early October, the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association officially named Vonn to its Stifel U.S. Alpine Ski A-Team for the 2026/27 season. This inclusion of the 41-year-old athlete follows a complex tibia and fibula fracture that required multiple surgeries and the use of an external fixator. The injury also included a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL). While her placement on the national roster alongside athletes such as Mikaela Shiffrin signals that a professional comeback remains a possibility, her immediate return to competition is uncertain. Vonn is scheduled for further surgery in November to address her knee and remove hardware from her leg. Under current FIS regulations, she may also be eligible for wildcards to facilitate a potential return to World Cup racing, though expectations suggest she may not return to full competition before the 2027/28 season. Vonn, an 84-time World Cup winner and three-time Olympic medalist, has indicated that while she is not ready to make a final decision on retirement, she “does not want to close the door on competition.”
