Lion cub bite incidents and wildlife regulation in Thailand

Reports of lion cub bites involving tourists have prompted inspections of commercial wildlife facilities in Thailand. In Phuket, authorities investigated a cafe following viral social media claims of an attack; however, the manager stated the images were old, and inspectors found the business held valid licenses and up-to-date vaccination records for the animals.

In a separate incident in Chiang Mai, a Chinese tourist sustained facial injuries after being bitten by a lion cub on August 28. The victim was treated at a hospital for tetanus and rabies. While the Chiang Mai cafe held a valid 30-day permit for displaying controlled wild animals, wildlife protection authorities issued a written warning because the establishment failed to report the incident within the required timeframe. Officials have since ordered a ban on tourists touching or holding the lions at the facility.

The incidents underscore ongoing scrutiny regarding the rapid growth of private lion ownership in Thailand. Under the Wildlife Conservation and Protection Act of 2019, commercial use of lions is legal with permits, contributing to a population increase from two in private hands in 2018 to over four hundred nationwide. Critics have pointed to regulatory loopholes and concerns regarding animal welfare and tourism safety.
