Lisbon Asian tiger mosquito control experiment

Overview

Health authorities in Lisbon have initiated an experimental project to control the Asian tiger mosquito (Aedes albopictus) population in the Alvalade district. The project utilizes the sterile insect technique, which involves releasing sterile male mosquitoes to mate with wild females, thereby preventing the production of offspring.

Following an initial release, a subsequent deployment of approximately 30,000 sterile males brought the total number of released insects in the project to roughly 90,000. Project leader and public health physician Afonso Moreira stated that the sterilization method is “proven and safe.”

Researchers are currently monitoring the survival, behavior, and dispersal patterns of the released insects. If the current phase proves successful, comparative studies between intervention zones and control zones are planned for May 2027. Authorities note that this biological method is intended to complement traditional measures, such as the elimination of standing water.
