On August 10, a 54-year-old American man was shot near the Hotel Santa Justa on Rua dos Correeiros in Lisbon’s Baixa district. Following the incident, the assailant fled the scene, and emergency services provided medical assistance to the victim. By the following day, authorities reported that the victim was a Swiss tourist who had been hospitalized. The Public Security Police (PSP) identified and detained a suspect allegedly involved in the shooting. The Ministry of Internal Administration (MAI) characterized the arrest as a “significant result of police action,” with the Judiciary Police leading the investigation. Subsequent reports clarified that the shooting occurred during a dispute involving individuals selling pressed bay leaf as a substitute for hashish, and that the injured party was a Swedish tourist. In response to response, the incident, Lisbon City Council is increasing oversight of illegal and irregular commercial activities in high-traffic zones. The government has guaranteed an additional 100 municipal police officers to join the existing force and is planning an 18 million euro investment to implement 100 video surveillance cameras. Police presence has been reinforced in Lisbon’s tourist areas. The Ministry noted that the PSP had already been increasing visibility in the Baixa district and other high-concentration tourist zones since June, a measure that contributed to a faster response to the shooting. Authorities intend to maintain and adjust police presence based on ongoing evaluations of criminal activity to ensure the safety of residents and tourists.
