The official political campaign for Lithuania’s 2027 municipal elections commenced on October 7. The elections, scheduled for March 7, 2027, allow political parties, committees, and candidates to begin public promotion of their programs. The Central Electoral Commission (VRK) has opened the registration process for independent political campaign participants. To register, candidates must fulfill specific requirements, such as appointing a campaign treasurer and opening a dedicated bank account used exclusively for campaign purposes. Documentation must be submitted via mail, email, in person, or through courier services. As of the first week of the campaign, the VRK has registered the first participants in the Jonava district, including the Lithuanian Social Democratic Party and the Liberal Movement. Registration for political campaign participants remains open until October 28. The VRK has emphasized a critical residency requirement: candidates must have their place of residence declared in the specific municipality where they intend to run. Due to recent amendments to the Election Code, this declaration must be finalized no later than 130 days before the election to ensure eligibility. The VRK expects to have a clearer picture of the total number of registered participants by October 29, after which the submission of candidate lists and documentation will proceed through December 17. Local political activity is already emerging in specific regions. In Alytus, the mayoral race includes incumbent Social Democrat Nerijus Cesiulis facing contenders Tautvydas Džiautas and Artūras Galakvoščius. In the Jurbarkas district, Mayor Skirmantas Mockevičius has formed a new political committee, ‘Už Jurbarko krašto ateitį’ (For the Future of the Jurbarkas Region), to facilitate decision-making within the municipal council. Expanding candidate lists, the Liberal Movement has announced its slate for 41 mayoral positions, including high-profile figures such as Member of Parliament Simonas Gentvilas for Vilnius and Simonas Kairys for Kaunas.
