Lithuania AI and ICT sector transformation
Overview
The information and communication technology (ICT) sector in Lithuania is experiencing a structural transformation driven by artificial intelligence and automation. Initial reports indicate a shift in the labor market, where companies are reducing routine tasks and redistributing functions. This has led to a contraction in the workforce, with employment statistics showing a net loss of 681 workers over an eight-month period. Additionally, while students show strong computational problem-solving skills, there is a noted disconnect between early digital literacy and enrollment in ICT bachelor’s programs.
In response to these technological shifts, the Lithuanian government is actively supporting AI adoption. The Ministry of Economy and Innovation has allocated up to 7.5 million euros to assist micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises in digitizing and optimizing production processes.
However, the transition faces significant infrastructure hurdles. Industry experts report a massive surge in demand for AI hardware, resulting in wait times of up to 36 weeks and doubling hardware prices. Due to data protection requirements that often necessitate local or European physical infrastructure, companies are facing global queues for GPU accelerators. To address research needs, Vilnius University has established a 0.5 million euro data center dedicated to machine learning and quantum computing.
