Lithuanian hunting law amendment debate

Overview

The Lithuanian Hunters and Fishers Association (LMŽD) has expressed opposition to proposed amendments to the Hunting Law currently being reviewed by the Seimas Environmental Protection Committee.

The proposed changes, submitted by the Lithuanian Aquaculture Producers Association, would permit the hunting of all non-limited game animals, including red deer, roe deer, and fallow deer, within fishery pond territories. While wild boar hunting is already allowed year-round in these areas, the amendment would expand these rights to other cervids.

LMŽD Director Laimonas Daukša cautioned that prioritizing specific economic interests could “fundamentally alter hunting principles” and negatively impact wildlife protection and population management. The association has formally advised the Ministry of Environment and the Environmental Protection Committee that wildlife should be managed through science and responsibility rather than industry interests.
