Lithuanian Nemuno aušra party legal investigations

The Lithuanian political party ‘Nemuno aušra’ and its leadership have become the subject of multiple legal investigations regarding financial misconduct.

Initially, the Central Electoral Commission (VRK) determined that the party and its leader, Remigijus Žemaitaitis, committed serious violations of election financing laws during the 2024 Seimas and presidential elections. The VRK found that the party’s parliamentary campaign was funded through illegal channels, including the use of intermediaries to transfer funds from legal entities to the party and Žemaitaitis’s presidential campaign. The commission characterized these actions as gross violations, noting that financing was provided by companies rather than individual donors.

Following these findings, law enforcement authorities, including the Financial Crime Investigation Service (FNTT), expanded their scrutiny through searches of the residences of five ‘Nemuno aušra’ politicians. This subsequent investigation focuses on potential fraud involving car rentals, specifically examining whether Seimas members Remigijus Žemaitaitis and Daiva Petkevičienė rented personal vehicles to the party while continuing to use them for personal purposes.
