Following the severe storm on August 22, the Lithuanian electricity distribution operator, ESO, has begun accepting compensation claims from residents. Preliminary estimates suggest total payouts for direct losses and delays in power restoration will reach approximately 7 million EUR. ESO has updated its compensation structure, increasing limits based on the duration of the electricity supply outage. Residents whose power was restored within 3 to 6 days can receive up to 220 EUR, while those with outages lasting 7 to 13 days can receive up to 440 EUR. For outages lasting 14 days or more, compensation can reach 660 EUR. The company has already received over 2,800 claims totaling approximately 664,000 EUR in requested damages, with the first payments scheduled to begin this Monday. Customers with existing claims do not need to reapply, as the higher limits will be applied automatically. Direct loss compensation is remains available for ~~private customers for~~ specific damages, ~~including~~ such as spoiled food (up to 60 EUR), accommodation costs (up to 60 EUR per day), or generator expenses. ~~Additionally, automatic compensation will be provided to customers whose electricity supply was not restored within 72 hours.~~ These payments ~~will be~~ are funded from company profits and are not expected to impact customer tariffs. To increase grid resilience, the Ministry of Energy has ordered ESO to accelerate the undergrounding of 10 kV power lines in the Lazdijai, Tauragė, and Jurbarkas districts. This project aims to reduce the risk of outages caused by natural disasters, with an accelerated completion target of the end of 2027.
