Livestock disease outbreaks in Bulgaria

Overview

The Bulgarian Food Safety Agency (BFSA) has responded to multiple outbreaks of livestock diseases affecting sheep and goats in various regions.

In early September, outbreaks of sheep and goat scab were identified in the villages of Karnalovo and Smolichano. These incidents prompted the establishment of 5-kilometer protection zones and 20-kilometer surveillance zones, alongside mandatory stall housing and movement bans for small ruminants.

By October, the BFSA reported new outbreaks of scrapie in the Kyustendil region, specifically in the villages of Pastuh and Novi Chiflik. Similar restrictive measures were implemented, including movement bans and enclosure requirements. Additionally, special regulations were introduced regarding the movement and processing of raw milk from the affected areas to comply with national and European legislation.
