The Ljubljana mayoral election campaign has been marked by several incidents involving candidate Luka Mesec. In October, Rok Snežič released controversial political posters in Ljubljana and Maribor depicting Mesec in Arabic clothing consuming cocaine with the label ‘Ljubljana Pasha’. Snežič claimed the posters were a response to previous insults made by Mesec, while Mesec dismissed the campaign as unworthy of comment. The Advertising Board of Slovenia noted that the state lacks a pre-screening filter for such political content, relying instead on reactive mechanisms regarding hate speech or criminal law. In November, Mesec reported instances of drone surveillance at his apartment. He stated apartment, stating that a drone filmed the interior of his bedroom and living room windows on two consecutive nights. While police arrived at the scene and reportedly filmed the drone, the operator fled. Mesec suggested the surveillance was an attempt to discredit him ahead of the elections, noting that unauthorized filming is a criminal offense. Following these events, Mesec filed a criminal complaint regarding the privacy breach. The situation escalated when journalist Bojan Požar shared a video on X, which allegedly shows Mesec reacting to the drone. Mesec has proposed criminal prosecution against Požar, citing Article 138 of the Penal Code regarding unauthorized filming. Požar claimed the footage was received via email with an offer to purchase more videos, suggesting the scene appeared staged. Additionally, anonymous entities, including a group identified as “Black Cube,” reportedly offered various videos of Mesec for sale in cryptocurrency. Political reactions have been divided: Prime Minister Janez Janša claimed drones have also been sent over his residence, while MP Katja Kokot accused President Nataša Pirc Musar of double standards.
