Leonardo Maria Del Vecchio, via his investment firm LMDV Media, initiated due diligence for a voluntary takeover bid of Società Editoriale Il Fatto S.p.A. (Seif), the publisher of the Italian newspaper Il Fatto Quotidiano. The proposed offer aimed for a total buyout at 0.286 euros per share, valuing the company at approximately 7.15 million euros. This bid sought to acquire at least 82.9% of voting capital to bypass statutory limits on single shareholder ownership and strengthen the publisher’s digital capabilities. In response, founding shareholders and director Marco Travaglio formally rejected the acquisition attempt. Travaglio stated that the shareholders, who hold a 52% stake, have no interest in selling and characterized the attempt to change company bylaws as a move “destined to fail.” He emphasized that the newspaper intends to remain independent and “not for sale,” maintaining its current editorial model despite the financial difficulties facing the Italian publishing industry. During an interview on La7, Travaglio highlighted the irony of the bid, noting that Del Vecchio had recently referred to the publication as ‘ratti del giornalismo’ (journalism rats) prior to expressing interest in the acquisition. Travaglio reiterated that the newspaper remains one of the few without owners and will continue to operate without public funding.
