Lockheed Martin and Saildrone USV missile testing
Overview
Lockheed Martin and Saildrone conducted a successful live-fire demonstration of a missile launch from a Saildrone Surveyor-class unmanned surface vehicle (USV) near Hawaii. The test took place during the U.S. Navy’s Rim of the Pacific (RIMPAC) 2026 exercise as part of the Navy’s Fleet Experimentation Program.
The demonstration involved the launch of two Joint Air-to-Ground Missiles (JAGM) using the Adjunct Remote Engagement System (ARES) fire control command-and-control system. The Surveyor platform operated in coordination with the USS Theodore Roosevelt Carrier Strike Group.
Beyond kinetic testing, the USV demonstrated passive electronic warfare capabilities by detecting, classifying, and identifying a surrogate threat radar system in coordination with an MH-60S helicopter. This project represents a rapid six-month transition from concept to live-fire demonstration, aiming to integrate defense technology onto commercial USV platforms.
