The healthcare system in the Lombardy region is experiencing significant operational strain characterized by staffing shortages and service restructuring. In Somma Lombardo, the replacement of an intervention unit with a medical clinic has drawn criticism for increasing bureaucratic hurdles for patients.

To address nursing shortages, the Lombardy Region has authorized a tender process to outsource the management of community hospitals to private entities for approximately 19 ASSTs. While officials state this is necessary to meet PNRR deadlines, critics have raised concerns regarding the long-term impact on the public healthcare system.

In the Como province, the crisis is further evidenced by a deficit of hundreds of medical professionals, including 293 vacant general practitioner positions and a shortage of approximately 250 nurses and 55 specialists within the Asst Lariana health authority. Regional data indicates that while millions of services are prescribed, only about half are managed by the public system, contributing to long waiting lists and causing many citizens to delay or forgo necessary care.
