The Lombardy region is implementing changes to its maternity and obstetric care services. Following regional approval, the maternity ward at Erba Hospital is scheduled to suspend services at the end of October, transitioning to providing only outpatient pregnancy check-ups. Patients will be redirected to birth centers in Como or Lecco, with ATS Insubria and Lifenet Healthcare stating that continuity of care will be maintained for women currently under the hospital’s care. Simultaneously, the regional government has approved the expansion of postpartum home midwifery services across all 28 local health authorities (ASST). This “Obstetric Care Continuity” model, supported by 700,000 euros from the 2026 budget, allows women to opt into home visits following hospital discharge. Midwives will assess the health of mothers and newborns, provide breastfeeding and infant care guidance, and identify social or psychological risks such as postpartum depression. Recent regional funding announcements have confirmed the extension of these home midwifery services across the 28 local health authorities as part of broader social welfare measures.
