Major London thoroughfares are undergoing transitions to pedestrian-only zones. In Camden, the council has announced the permanent pedestrianization of a section of Camden High Street, extending from the junction of Parkway and Kentish Town Road to Jamestown Road and Hawley Crescent. This decision follows an 18-month trial that reported a 14.4% reduction in nitrogen dioxide levels and improved safety metrics. Public consultation showed 57% support for the move. To mitigate transport impacts, a new bus lane trial on Kentish Town Road is planned. Permanent structures are expected to replace temporary barriers in early 2027, supported by a £1 million investment for cleaning and safety patrols. Future expansions may reach Camden Lock Bridge and Chalk Farm Road. Simultaneously, the Mayor of London has launched the pedestrianization of approximately one kilometer of Oxford Street, between Orchard Street and Great Portland Street. Managed by the Oxford Street Development Corporation, the initiative removes private cars, taxis, buses, and bicycles. The project involves a £150 million investment aimed at reversing commercial decline, store closures, and increased crime. While the move has been met with consumer enthusiasm, it Mayor described the implementation as a “historic” step, the plan has faced challenges regarding opposition from Westminster City Council, local residents, and some merchants. Challenges include cyclist navigation and accessibility for persons with disabilities. Transport for London is implementing geofencing technology to manage e-bike and e-scooter compliance within the zone.
