London ULEZ impact on child respiratory health
Overview
A five-year study published in The Lancet Public Health indicates that London’s Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) is linked to improved lung growth and function in children. The research, known as the Children’s Health in London and Luton (CHILL) study, monitored over 3,400 children aged six to nine between 2018 and 2022.
Comparing London children to a control group in Luton, researchers found that nitrogen dioxide exposure in London fell twice as fast as in Luton following the 2019 ULEZ implementation. Consequently, London children’s lung capacity and health accelerated to levels comparable to those in the Luton group, with lung function increasing by an average of 10ml per year more than their peers.
The proportion of London children with clinically impaired lung function decreased from 14% to 9%. Experts suggest these findings provide “strong evidence that clean air zones can mitigate the developmental damage caused by traffic-related air pollution.”
