LONGi solar cell efficiency record

Overview

Chinese photovoltaic manufacturer LONGi has established a new world record for single-junction crystalline silicon solar cell efficiency, reaching 28.29%. The efficiency of the hybrid interdigitated-back-contact (HIBC) cell was verified by Germany’s Institute for Solar Energy Research Hamelin (ISFH).

This milestone represents the third time the company has broken a record in 2026, following previous achievements of 28.04% and 28.13%. The company stated that this efficiency level reaches approximately 96.2% of the theoretical limit for crystalline silicon solar cells. The HIBC architecture utilizes a combination of n-type and p-type contacts on the rear of the cell to eliminate contact shading on the front surface, thereby maximizing light absorption.
