Aspyr Media has completed the surprise shadow-drop release of ‘The Lord of the Rings: War in the North – Legacy Edition’. Licensed from Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, this updated version of the 2011 Snowblind Studios title is now available on PC (Steam, Epic Games Store, and GOG), PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, and Nintendo Switch 2. The Legacy Edition provides several technical and gameplay enhancements over the original versions. Key improvements include support for 60 FPS on compatible platforms, 4K resolution, higher resolution textures, improved shadow resolution, and updated vegetation. Quality-of-life updates feature a character hot-swap system, refined target locking, an updated UI/UX with visible health and mana bars, and an auto-save system. The game maintains its cooperative focus, supporting up to three players online and two players in local split-screen, though the Nintendo Switch version lacks local co-op. Players follow the fellowship of Eradan, Andriel, and Farin as they combat the threat of Agandûr in Middle-earth. This release serves to make the cult classic accessible again following its removal from digital storefronts in 2019 due to expiring licenses.
