In early May, offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel announced a plan to center the Chargers' offense around quarterback Justin Herbert, emphasizing that the team had not yet tapped his full potential. He linked the upcoming roster decision on tight end David Njoku to the broader goal of supporting Herbert. By the end of May, the Chargers formally hired McDaniel as offensive coordinator for the 2026 season, replacing Greg Roman. Known for leading the league in screen-passes with Miami, McDaniel was expected to lift the Chargers’ scoring average to around 25 points per game and boost Herbert’s MVP chances. During a June minicamp, McDaniel tweaked Herbert’s shotgun alignment, having his left foot forward to create a quicker release and more space for receivers. The new stance produced a 15-yard pass to Tre Harris and a precise throw to Quentin Johnston, with fellow quarterback Trey Lance also taking part in the drills. In July, after two consecutive wild-card losses, head coach Jim Harbaugh reiterated the coaching change, stressing that McDaniel’s modern, timing-based scheme aims to improve Herbert’s production and advance the team deeper into the postseason. At the August training camp, McDaniel highlighted several breakout candidates. He praised wide receiver Tre' Harris, saying, “He is a grown man,” and referenced the film *Anchorman* in a light-hearted quote, stating, “Ron Burgundy wasn’t lying.” He also warned defenses about the power of running back Omarion Hampton. As the camp progressed, the team integrated new tight end David Njoku, who joined on a one-year, $3 million deal. Njoku praised McDaniel’s intelligence and unique playcalling, while Harbaugh noted his strength and fluidity. Regarding the backfield, McDaniel indicated that while Hampton remains a lead back, running backs Kimani Vidal and Keaton Mitchell will play significant roles, suggesting Hampton may share more touches than previously anticipated.
