Mid‑July 2026 saw a series of water‑main failures across Los Angeles, beginning with a 36‑inch cast‑iron pipe burst on Sunset Boulevard on July 16 that flooded the Sunset Strip and created a sinkhole. Subsequent breaks on July 23 near Santa Monica Boulevard, July 26 near Paramount Studios, and July 28 on an 8‑inch main in the Fairfax District forced the LADWP to isolate sections, close streets and conduct rapid repairs. The Fairfax incident damaged a parked car and led a resident to file a claim with the utility. On August 2 an eight‑inch cast‑iron pipe ruptured in the Beverly Grove neighborhood at San Vicente Boulevard and Lindenhurst Avenue. LADWP shut off service to about ten customers, closed the boulevard, and restored water by mid‑afternoon with no injuries. The utility said the spate of failures underscores the need to replace aging trunk lines, many over 80 years old. A week later, on August 7, two breaks occurred on a 12‑inch pipeline installed in 1959 in the Hollywood Hills. Each leak temporarily cut water to roughly 300 customers; service was restored after repairs later that day. The incidents closed Wonderland Avenue, damaged pavement and prompted bottled‑water distribution. LADWP noted the pipe has leaked twice before in the past 21 years and will assess a replacement schedule, highlighting ongoing challenges of aging infrastructure.
