Lotto-Intermarché cycling nutrition research
Overview
The Belgian cycling team Lotto-Intermarché, in collaboration with Ghent University, is conducting scientific research into high-carbohydrate nutrition strategies to enhance rider performance. The study investigates whether professional cyclists can exceed the standard guideline of 120 grams of carbohydrates per hour.
Researchers are conducting three-hour tests where athletes consume approximately 140 grams of carbohydrates per hour. By using exhaled air analysis, the team monitors how much ingested carbohydrate is utilized by the body. The goal is to prevent the body from switching to fat metabolism, which can cause performance drops when carbohydrate stores are depleted.
Trainer Kobe Vermeire noted that riders are already conditioned to high intake, while Professor Jan Boone emphasized that optimizing intake could sustain performance during the final stages of long races and improve recovery during multi-day competitions.
