Recent studies emphasize cognitive protection. A ten-year study of 1,742 U.S. adults found that higher nut consumption was associated with improved memory, reasoning, and processing speed. Furthermore, post-mortem analysis published in the journal Neurology suggests that high adherence to the Mediterranean diet is linked to lower levels of brain plaques, potentially representing a brain up to 18 years younger than those with low adherence. The MIND diet showed similar benefits, with leafy green vegetable consumption specifically linked to plaque levels consistent with a brain up to 19 years younger. Regarding mental well-being, research in England involving over 3,200 adults aged 50 to 90 indicates that strict adherence to the Mediterranean diet is linked to higher levels of mental well-being and less mental health decline during the COVID-19 pandemic. These benefits may be driven by antioxidants, fiber, and healthy fats, or the gut-brain axis via fermented foods. Broadening the scope of brain health, reviews suggest that polyphenol-rich diets—including Mediterranean and MIND patterns—are more effective at reducing cognitive decline than isolated compounds. These dietary patterns influence biological processes such as chronic inflammation, oxidative stress, and the brain’s ability to clear damaged proteins. Newer findings from the REGARDS study, involving approximately 14,000 participants, reinforce the link between the MIND diet—a hybrid of Mediterranean and DASH patterns—and reduced cognitive impairment risk. In women specifically, strict adherence was associated with an 8% reduction in the risk of cognitive decline. Expanding on this, a large-scale American study of approximately 93,000 participants found that long-term adherence to the MIND diet for at least 10 years was associated with a 25% reduction in dementia risk. In a separate biological discovery, researchers at Columbia University’s Zuckerman Institute found that the slow maturation of human microglia, the brain’s primary immune cells, may contribute to superior human intelligence.
