In late August 2026, a fire occurred at a taco shop in the Nueva España neighborhood of Zapopan, reportedly caused by an LP gas leak during food preparation. The incident resulted in two people being hospitalized with various burns in stable condition. On September 11, 2026, a significant gas explosion occurred in the Olivar del Conde Primera Sección neighborhood of the Álvaro Obregón borough, Mexico City. The blast, likely caused by the accumulation of LP gas from a 30-kilogram cylinder, resulted in two deaths and 14 injuries. The explosion caused severe structural damage, including the partial collapse of a residence and damage to a nearby taquería, ‘La Bajadita’. Authorities have classified five nearby homes as high-risk structures. Local authorities clarified that the explosion did not originate within the ‘La Bajadita’ taquería, but rather in an adjacent property, creating a shockwave that damaged the restaurant and surrounding homes. Medical reports from the ISSSTE Hospital General ‘Dr. Fernando Quiroz Gutiérrez’ indicate that one of the injured remains in serious condition in the intensive care unit. Local officials have established a temporary shelter at the Molino de Rosas Community Development Center to assist displaced families, while specialized investigators from the Fiscalía General de Justicia de la Ciudad de México conduct forensic studies involving experts in fire, gas installations, engineering, and architecture to confirm the exact cause. Due to the risk of total collapse, officials have ordered the demolition of two buildings.
