LSU collegiate eligibility and NIL disputes

Louisiana State University (LSU) is involved in a legal dispute regarding the eligibility of former professional football players. A Louisiana judge issued a preliminary injunction against the NCAA and the Southeastern Conference (SEC), preventing them from declaring players Dae’Quan Wright and Zxavian Harris ineligible to compete in collegiate athletics.

The SEC has responded to this ruling by filing a lawsuit against LSU. In addition to eligibility battles, the university is facing Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) tensions. Former quarterback Jayden Daniels and his attorney reportedly issued a cease-and-desist letter to the university concerning the unauthorized use of his NIL, an issue that has contributed to friction between the institution and former players.

LSU has since reached the NCAA 105-player roster limit by adding cornerback Aiden Anding and defensive end Gabriel Reliford, effectively ending the possibility of Wright and Harris joining the team this season. This decision follows an escalating legal dispute in which the SEC filed an amended federal lawsuit that could potentially allow the conference to expel LSU if the program rosters players who have previously signed professional contracts.

While a Louisiana district court judge previously issued a preliminary injunction to prevent punishment for playing athletes involved in the eligibility lawsuit, LSU opted to secure its roster with returning injured players to avoid the risk of expulsion. Wright and Harris are reportedly exploring legal options to return to college football.
