Lufthansa Airbus A380 Munich landing incident

Overview

An investigation by the German Federal Bureau of Aircraft Accident Investigation (BFU) examined a Lufthansa Airbus A380 that landed prematurely at Munich Airport on August 17. The aircraft, traveling from San Francisco, touched down approximately 19 meters short of the runway threshold during heavy rain and thunderstorms, resulting in damage to seven main landing gear tires and three runway lights. No injuries occurred.

The BFU interim report found that because the Instrument Landing System (ILS) for runway 26L was unavailable due to maintenance, the crew utilized a satellite-based RNP approach. Data indicated the aircraft descended below the calculated flight path during the final stages of the approach. While the captain noted the low altitude, the descent speed could not be reduced in time to prevent the short landing.

In response to the incident, Lufthansa updated its standard operating procedures for the Airbus A320, A350, and A380 fleets. Pilots are now required to deactivate both the autopilot and Flight Director upon reaching approach minimums when using FLS guidance to prevent altitude deviations.
