Lufthansa Group has commenced the rollout of high-speed, low-earth orbit satellite internet across its fleet through a partnership with SpaceX’s Starlink. The commercial launch began on August 19, 2026, when CEO Jens Ritter activated the service aboard a Lufthansa Airbus A320neo, the first aircraft in the fleet to feature the technology. The inaugural flight, an Airbus A320neo traveling from Frankfurt to Rome, saw the system activated at an altitude of 10,000 meters. This technological shift marks a transition in connectivity providers, as Starlink replaces Deutsche Telekom as the primary provider for Lufthansa’s onboard connectivity. The initiative, branded as ‘Lufthansa Group Wi-Fi’, aims to equip approximately 850 aircraft by 2029. This expansion will cover various group airlines, including SWISS, Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines, ITA Airways, Eurowings, Edelweiss, Discover Airlines, Air Dolomiti, and Lufthansa City Airlines. Mastercard will sponsor the new Wi-Fi portal. Following the initial Lufthansa launch, Austrian Airlines has also debuted the service on an Airbus A320neo during a flight to Porto. Austrian Airlines plans to equip 20 aircraft with Starlink by the end of the 2026/27 winter flight schedule as part of a broader fleet modernization. An additional ten A320 aircraft are expected to receive the upgrade by the end of 2026, with installations primarily taking place at Lufthansa Technik facilities in Berlin during scheduled maintenance. The service is designed to support data-intensive applications such as video streaming and cloud-based work. Access will be free of charge for Miles & More members and Travel ID users across all travel classes. To maintain onboard etiquette, passengers are prohibited from making voice or video calls and live streaming, and must wear headphones for audio or video content.
