Luke Gosling steps aside as Special Envoy

Overview

Federal Labor MP Luke Gosling was arrested on 30 July 2026 and charged with two counts of assault on Northern Territory Administrator David Connolly following an incident at the NT Thailand Grand Festival in Darwin on 18 July. Gosling denied the allegations, calling them “ridiculous,” while his lawyer, Marty Aust, suggested the arrest was a politicised move rather than a summons.

Initially, the government announced that Gosling would retain his position as the Prime Minister’s special envoy for defence, veterans’ affairs and northern Australia. Health Minister Mark Butler defended this, noting that backbenchers are not required to stand aside when charged, unlike ministers. However, Gosling has since announced he will temporarily step aside from these special envoy roles to avoid being a distraction to the business of government.

This decision follows a new charge alleging that Gosling breached his bail conditions on 14 August. His existing bail conditions included restrictions on approaching within 50 metres of the NT Government House and requirements to provide 48 hours’ notice before attending official events. Gosling continues to “categorically deny all the allegations made against me.” He is scheduled to appear in Darwin Local Court on 30 September.
