Lunar deployment of AI and high-performance computing
Overview
Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) and Astrolab are collaborating to deploy the Spaceborne Computer-4 (SBC-4) to the lunar south pole. Scheduled for late 2026 as part of NASA’s Commercial Lunar Payload Services (CLPS) initiative, the mission will utilize Voyager Technologies’ Griffin-1 lander to transport Astrolab’s FLIP rover.
The SBC-4 is a specialized module featuring low-power CPUs, GPUs, and Kioxia SSD storage, designed with a fanless, liquid-cooled structure to survive extreme lunar environments. By providing “edge of the edge” computing, the system aims to enable real-time data analysis, including LiDAR processing, autonomous navigation, and vision reasoning, thereby reducing the need for time-delayed communication with Earth.
Beyond testing hardware durability and the reliability of scalable AI services, the mission will employ machine learning algorithms—similar to those used on Mars—to assist with positioning in areas lacking GPS. Other mission payloads include the CubeRover, the LandCam-X optical navigation system, and the Nanofiche GLPH micro-archive.
