The study suggests these organisms might find refuge in protected nooks, such as deep crater floors or even within an astronaut’s bootprint.
Researchers have warned that this poses a significant risk of biological contamination for upcoming crewed missions, such as the Artemis program. The potential for Earth-based bacteria and fungi to colonize lunar environments could complicate future research and the search for natural lunar organic matter, making it difficult to distinguish between indigenous lunar material and biological matter transported by human activity.
