Lung cancer research and treatment advancements

Overview

Recent medical developments have highlighted significant progress in both the treatment and detection of lung cancer. At the World Conference on Lung Cancer (WCLC 2026) in Seoul, clinical data emphasized a shift toward personalized therapies. Findings from the ADAURA study showed that adjuvant osimertinib treatment for EGFR-mutated non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) resulted in a 79% survival rate for patients in stages IB–IIIA, compared to 64% for those on a placebo. Additionally, studies involving ivonescimab and trastuzumab deruxtecan demonstrated improved survival and progression-free outcomes in metastatic and HER2-mutant NSCLC cases.

Further research has focused on early detection and new therapeutic targets. Studies led by NYU Langone Health indicate that liquid biopsies can detect circulating tumor DNA to predict disease recurrence months before it is visible on standard imaging. Meanwhile, researchers at UTHealth Houston identified the enzyme Phospholipase D1 (PLD1) as a potential target, noting that targeting the Golgi secretory machinery slowed tumor growth in mouse models.
