Physicists conducting the LUX-ZEPLIN (LZ) experiment at the Sanford Underground Research Facility in South Dakota have recorded a single, unexplained particle interaction that may indicate the presence of dark matter. The event, designated LZ230616, involved a potential collision between a Weakly Interacting Massive Particle (WIMP) and a xenon atom within the detector’s 10 tons of ultra-pure liquid xenon. Researchers have noted that the particle is estimated to be more than 200 times heavier than a proton. However, the statistical significance of the signal is currently 2.6 sigma, which is below the 5-sigma threshold required for a formal discovery. This level of significance suggests approximately a 0.5% chance that the signal is random background noise. Lead author Dr. Sam Eriksen noted that the event occurred in a region of parameter space where background noise is extremely low, making the interaction “particularly intriguing.” The interaction, which involved a flash of light and an electrical current, does not match known background radiation patterns and remains consistent with theoretical expectations for WIMPs. The research is the result of an international collaboration of 250 scientists and engineers from 39 institutions, managed by the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. Scientists are continuing to analyze data collected between March 2023 and April 2024 to determine if the interaction is a breakthrough or an extremely rare background event. As of September 2026, the LZ experiment continues to be recognized for observing potential hints of dark matter. These observations, involving particle interactions that may involve WIMPs, represent a possible first hint of dark matter interaction with ordinary matter.
