The municipality of Macerata has initiated several urban renewal and infrastructure projects aimed at revitalizing its historic center. In September 2026, the local government approved a memorandum with ERAP Marche to launch an urban regeneration project involving the recovery of a degraded building to create five subsidized residential apartments for young couples. Following this, the municipality and APM announced that work to replace the elevators connecting the city to the historic center would begin on October 4, 2026. Technical evaluations determined that postponing the intervention until January 2027 was not feasible because the existing systems had reached the end of their technical life, resulting in frequent breakdowns and high maintenance requirements. The first new elevator is expected to be available as early as February. To mitigate the impact of the closures, particularly during the Christmas period, the city has implemented several measures. A replacement shuttle service is operating between Giardini Diaz and Piazza Oberdan, with weekday afternoon service running from 15:30 to 20:00 and morning service scheduled to expand the following week. Additionally, the city is increasing the number of available blue parking spaces in the historic center and providing information via new directional signage and leaflets distributed by Civil Protection operators. As of October 12, 2026, the shuttle service has expanded to include morning hours, running from 07:30 to 15:00, Monday through Saturday. The buses depart from Piazzale dei Giardini Diaz to Piazza Oberdan without intermediate stops, with a frequency of approximately every ten minutes. Mobility Councilor Barbara Antolini noted that the expanded schedule provides a structured response to the needs of residents, students, and workers. For individuals with disabilities or mobility difficulties, a dedicated transport service using specialized vehicles is available via reservation through the Ircr operational center.
