Madagascar institutional refoundation consultation and election planning

Madagascar has entered the operational phase of a national consultation process intended for institutional refoundation. A technical committee, led by Prime Minister Mamitiana Rajaonarison, has begun meetings at the Mahazoarivo State Palace to monitor the process and ensure adherence to the established calendar. This committee includes representatives from civil society, religious entities, the private sector, traditional authorities, and youth from all provinces. The Council of Christian Churches in Madagascar (FFKM) is coordinating the initiative, which includes an ecumenical service to launch the process and introduce a national coordinator. The consultation is designed to be grassroots-oriented, reaching the level of fokontany to gather public concerns. While the launch occurred approximately one month later than originally projected, stakeholders and international partners are awaiting specific details regarding the methodology and timeline, particularly concerning upcoming electoral deadlines. Expanding on these efforts, the Presidency of the Refoundation of the Republic has announced a multi-stakeholder consultation scheduled for September 1 to September 8 in Iavoloha. This meeting aims to prepare for upcoming elections by convening political parties, groupings, and civil society organizations focused on electoral matters. This initiative follows political consultations initiated by Head of State Colonel Michaƫl Randrianirina in late July. Following his return from the Southern African Development Community (SADC) summit on August 18, Randrianirina stated the goal is to accelerate the electoral process and reach a common consensus to avoid indefinite political uncertainty. He reaffirmed that elections are slated for 2027.
