Madeira educator shortage and placement disputes
Overview
The Madeira Teachers' Union (SPM) has raised alarms regarding a severe shortage of educators in the region following the teacher placement process for the 2026/2027 academic year. According to SPM coordinator Francisco Oliveira, only 216 teachers were placed, a sharp decline from the more than 400 placed the previous year. While the regional Secretary of Education estimated a need for 450 to 500 new teachers, the union claims over 550 new hires are actually required to address the deficit, noting that over 200 educators have left the regional system.
In response to these staffing concerns and the placement procedures, teachers held a demonstration in Funchal titled ‘Tribuna da Indignação dos Professores e Educadores’ in front of the Regional Secretariat for Education, Science, and Technology. Union leaders criticized the administration for creating job insecurity and precariousness. Specifically, union leader Lucinda Gabriel characterized the process as a ‘disaster,’ citing concerns over the stability of contract workers and a lack of respect for the professional dignity of early childhood educators.
